The best beaches in and around Lisbon
Lisbon is an excellent city to discover some of the best beaches and landscapes in Portugal. Surfing, nature, hot weather and good food are the main reasons that make the city and its local beaches an ideal place of choice to enjoy the summer. In this article, we point out some of the best beaches in Lisbon.
Carcavelos Beach
It is one of the closest beaches to the center of Lisbon, next to the Fort of São Julião da Barra. During the summer it’s waters are calm and without waves and has an extensive sandy beach, inviting long walks. It has several sanitation infrastructures, as well as restaurants, bars and cafes on its walkway. If you want to go by car, it has several car parks and is accessible by train, a 10-minute walk away from the station.
Santo Amaro Beach
This is the largest beach in the municipality of Oeiras. The sand is crossed by the Promenade of Oeiras and is illuminated at night. It also has a bar with a terrace on the beach, perfect for a refreshment or a light meal. We recommend going by train as parking options are scarce.
Tamariz Beach
Emerald green waters, white sand and close to several bars, restaurants and the Estoril Casino, make this one of the best beaches in Lisbon. We advise you to go by train, as the station is next to the beach and parking spaces are scarce.
Beaches of Costa da Caparica
Costa da Caparica has such good beaches that it is difficult to choose one. Just 20 minutes from Lisbon, it has a prominent coastal strip, from Cova do Vapor Beach to Fonte da Telha. It has several restaurants, with excellent fish and seafood cuisine and several bars.
Queen’s Beach
In the center of Cascais, it is one of the beaches of choice of the village. It is a small beach and is embedded between cliffs, but its calm waters attract many bathers and tourists. It is easy to reach and you can always eat or drink something in the many options of restaurants and cafes you find in the village.
Guincho Beach
It is situated at the foot of the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, a 30-minute drive from Lisbon and has an 800-metre extension. It is one of the best beaches for water sports such as surfing, kitesurfing and windsurfing. It is also known for one of the scenes from the 1969 James Bond film “007 – At Her Majesty’s Service”.
Galapinhos Beach
For many this is one of the best beaches in Europe, for others still an unknown secret. In the middle of the Serra da Arrábida and difficult to access, it is a true paradise for those looking for a beach surrounded by nature and with calm and crystal clear waters. The fastest way to get to this beach is by car, taking approximately an hour. If you have no other alternative, there are several transport links to reach this little paradise.
Portinho da Arrábida Beach
Located in the Natural Park of Serra da Arrábida, it is one of the most beautiful in Portugal. With fine white sands and clear waters, this beach, surrounded by the mountains, is one of arrábida’s illustrated postcards. With a quiet bay, it invites anyone to go diving and observe all its marine diversity. In 2010 it was considered one of the Seven Wonders of Portugal. In summer, it is not possible to access this beach by car, the only option being the bus from Azeitão.
If you choose to go to the beaches by public transport, we recommend that you be aware of the schedules so that you make the most of each beach and especially your day. For any information, count on the Hotel Portuense to give you the best recommendations and make the most of your stay.
